What to wear in winter: warm layers without a bulky fit

Does It Fit You ·
Winter dressing depends on the weather, wind, rain and how active you will be, not just the month. A layered outfit lets you adjust between a cold commute and a heated room. Choose pieces that work together instead of relying on one very thick garment.
Build three useful layers
A base layer sits next to the skin. For active days in cold weather, merino wool or suitable technical synthetics can help manage moisture; cotton can stay wet for longer. For a short indoor-focused outing, comfort and your own preferences may matter more.
A middle layer provides insulation, such as a wool jumper or fleece. An outer layer should match the conditions: wind resistance, water resistance and waterproof protection are different claims. Check the product specification rather than assuming a heavy coat is waterproof.
Check the fit with layers underneath
Try the coat over the type of jumper you actually intend to wear. Fasten it, reach forward and lift your arms. Check the shoulders, chest and upper arms for pulling. A roomy body does not guarantee enough space in the sleeves.
Do not automatically go up a size. Compare the brand chart and garment measurements, then consider the intended cut. Outerwear designed for layering may already include extra room. Too much bulk can also restrict movement.
Match the outfit to the day
For a city commute, a breathable base, removable knit layer and weather-appropriate coat are a flexible starting point. For an office, choose layers you can remove without needing a complete change of outfit.
For long periods outdoors or severe weather, use purpose-designed clothing and local safety advice. Add suitable footwear, socks, gloves and head protection. Everyday outfit guidance is not a guarantee of safety in extreme cold.
Care for winter fabrics between wears
Air knitwear where appropriate, dry damp clothing fully and follow care labels before washing. Store heavy knits folded to avoid stretching them on hangers. Technical outerwear may require specific detergent and care to maintain its finish. [GORE-TEX garment care instructions]
Explore wool, polyester and nylon in the fabric library to compare their properties. Fibre choice matters, but thickness, construction, fit and weather protection all contribute to warmth.
